Read the first paragraph, and make a prediction about the main idea of the passage based on what you see in the first paragraph ONLY!

Read the passage on Louis Armstrong. As you read: CIRCLE the thesis statement (the main argument) UNDERLINE the topic sentences (main ideas) in each paragraph UNDERLINE/CIRCLE any other details (names, dates, etc.) that you think are important to know

Now that you have read the passage, go back to the concept map and fill in the Main Idea and Supporting Detail boxes. MAKE SURE the supporting details actually point back to the main idea

In the three boxes in the middle of your Concept Map, track Armstrong’s career development (Paragraphs 2, 3, and 5) (Summarize it in sequential order!)
