Surely the most inspiring story of the year was bravely with which Stephen Sutton tackled the end of his life. Dying from cancer he gained his first class honours degree, ticked off his bucket list and raised £4.5million for charity before he passed away. Stephen Sutton

Poppies Tower Bridge It was a deliberately simple idea. To commemorate the centenary of the outbreak of the first world war there would be 888,246 ceramic red poppies gradually planted until 11 November. Each represented one British or colonial life lost. By the end there would be a sea of red. Then they would disappear.

Prince George’s first birthday Prince George with Duke and Duchess of Cambridge Prince George's first birthday on July 22 was marked by events including the release of this official picture, by photographer John Stillwell. It was taken at the Sensational Butterflies outdoor exhibition at London's Natural History Museum. George will be joined by a younger brother or sister when William and Kate have their second child - with the new royal expected to arrive in April.
