THE PURPOSE OF THIS COURSE IS TO SUPPORT THE STUDENT IN LEARNING TO HOW TO USE A SMART PHONE. (SUPPORT WILL BE PROVIDED FOR USING IPHONES) SMART PHONES Presented by John Mudie, Ph.D., and Stephanie Muhammad.

WEBSITE NAME AND USEAGE You can get to the class website by typing the address http://www.rlccomputer.com into the address bar of Internet Explorer and then pressing the Enter key on your keyboard. The current day's classes are listed on front page. Click the Phone Calls entry if its there. http://www.rlccomputer.com If its not there then click on Phones on the main page. Then select Smart Phones Curriculum and click on it's entry. Find the entry for Phone Calls and click on it to get to this page. Please remember that you can always ask the Computer Lab Tech to help you get to this page

WHO ARE WE ? WHY ARE WE HERE? What’s your name? What’s happening in your life today? (can you say it in forty words or less?) What would you like to achieve as a result of this class? What do you want to do on your Smart Phone that you can’t do now ?

REFERENCE MATERIAL We will be using Android Phones for Dummies by Dan Gookin as a class text book. There is a reference copy in your Computer Lab. There is also a book on iPhones for Dummies in the lab.. A way of getting help is to go into Google and put in key words describing your problem and see what Google can find in the way of solutions to your problem which most probably other people have experienced before you.Google

CERTIFICATES You can request a Certificate of Completion at the end of the course All you have to do is to turn in six satisfactory completed assignments for each class by the next class.Certificate of Completion

WHO WOULD DO LIKE TO YOU CALL TODAY? Think of two people you would like to call today. One of whom should be on the contact list you made up last week.

SHARE YOUR IDEA OF WHO YOU WOULD LIKE TO CALL TODAY. Find a partner The person closest to the door shares for thirty seconds about who you would like to call today. The other person just listen’s, doesn’t comment or give advice and then says “Thank you”. Then the other person shares for thirty seconds about who you would like to call today.. MAKING A CALL TO A NUMBER. This section is covered in pages 69-73 of Android phones for Dummies Turn on your phone if its off by pressing the Power/Lock switch. Find and press the phone icon. If necessary, press the Dialpad icon Type in your number Touch the handset icon to place the call Talk. Touch the red End Call icon to end the call.

MAKE A CALL TO SOME-ONE ON YOUR CONTACT LIST. This section is covered in page 75 of Android Phones for Dummies. Turn on your phone by pressing the Power/Lock key if necessary. Press on the Contacts or People icon. Scroll down the list of contacts to find the person you want. Touch the person you want to call. (You may also have to press a Phone icon) Talk Hang up by pressing the End Call button when you are done.

OTHER WAYS OF ANSWERING THE PHONE When your phone buzzes, lights up etc, you can do various things Slide answer button to right to accept call Slide answer button to left to reject Let it ring until caller gives up or answering machine takes over Silence the ringing by pressing the volume key. Swipe up to send a text message

TURN OFF YOUR PHONE See page 33-34 of Android Phones for Dummies Hold down the Power/Lock key until a display appears You usually have various options. Use the airplane mode when you are in an airplane. Click and hold the Power Off option. The phone will turn off. Remember to re-charge it!
