BICS vs. CALP We need to use data to determine if proficiency has been made Often, teachers confuse BICS for CALP Just because a student can communicate with peers, does not mean they have attainted English language proficiency We use data from ACCESS testing to determine a student’s proficiency

Determines the English proficiency level Evaluates the effectiveness of ESOL programs Provides information to enhance instruction for English Language Learners Assesses English proficiency gains using a standards based instrument Provides data for meeting federal and state requirements

Based on ACCESS scores which arrive in May A LAC conference may be held for some students who have not met clear exit criteria DIBELS, AMES WEB, EOCT, and GHSGT data are also considered for possible exit

ELL-M students have met criteria to exit ESOL ELL-M students will be monitored for two years A form will be provided for classroom teachers to assess progress or identify concerns

TPC conferences are held to address student testing accommodations Parents are encouraged to attend LAC conferences Parents are provided with ACCESS test results in May and are invited to attend a meeting in the fall to have those explained in detail. Many schools have activities designed to promote parent participation
