1 Unit 3: Preparing for Transitions and Change Lesson 3- Resumes and Cover Letters

2 Resumes A resume is a summary of your education, job, volunteer and other accomplishments and experience. It is often called a curriculum vitae. It is your chance to show the employer the knowledge and skills you have and how you acquired them. Don't panic if you haven't had a lot of paid employment. You can highlight your transferable skills from volunteer work and other experiences. ◦ RECALL: They are skills acquired in any area of life that can be applied to other situations including a job. On your resume, you must include info about where you live and where you can be reached.

3 Resumes EDUCATION: I have shown readers how much schooling I've had. I have stated what grade I am in. I have mentioned courses I've taken outside school.

4 Resumes OBJECTIVE: What is your goal or objective with this resume? Include it! Be as specific as you can about the nature of work you are seeking. Examples: ◦ "to obtain a summer position in a retail setting“ ◦ "To obtain a position that provides valuable experiences and life skills ◦ "To obtain a part-time position at the Bay” ◦ “To obtain work after school and on the weekends in a restaurant setting.”

5 Resumes SKILLS: Something you've learned to do. Think of skills you have relevant to your objective. Always include any other language you may know, such as French, Russian, Chinese on your resume! Knowing another language is a valuable SKILL-- and an asset in multicultural Canada. ◦ Владею русским ◦ 我说中国 ◦ أنا أتكلم العربية

7 Resumes REFERENCES The people who will vouch for your experience and say favorable things about you. They should be able to talk about the qualities that the person reading your resume wants to know you have including being a team player, polite, punctual and dependable. On your resume, you can write "References available upon request". For the assignment, please include THREE!
