4 The Technique The answer is in 1 place in the text.
It is a “Green Light Question” Go directly to the text and find the answer. Questions typically begin with: Who is… What are… Where is… When was… How did…

5 Let’s Practice The Pencil
Read the following passage and answer the 2 right there questions that follow: The Pencil Penny was a yellow number 2 pencil. She lived in an orange pencil box on Tommy's desk. She liked to draw pictures, but she didn’t like to do school work. Her favorite time of day was when Tommy went home. When she was alone in her pencil box, she dreamed of writing beautiful poems that would make her famous. Who is Penny? Where did she live? Pulled from the sample question on the website: There are more materials available for student use.

6 Now You Try Read the passage and write 3 right there questions.
When you are finished you will trade with a friend and answer each other’s questions. REMEMBER the question starters: Who is… What are… Where is… When was… How did… Provide a level appropriate text. You may want to have texts available for each guided reading group you have, and the kids can trade with in the groups.

9 Focus Question What do you think Think and Search Questions are? How do you think it is different than the right there questions we’ve been answering? How do you think knowing how to identify and answer these questions will help you when you are reading?

10 The Technique Find the answer by searching several places in the text.
It is a “Yellow Light Question” You must slow down and look in a few places to find the answer. Questions might begin with: What caused… What were the differences between… What was similar about… Compare…

11 Let’s Practice Read the book The Old Woman Who Named Things by Cynthia Rylant and answer the 2 think and search questions that follow: What were the differences between the old woman at the beginning of the story, and the old woman at the end? (How did she change?) What factors caused her to change?

12 Now You Try Read the passage and write 3 think and search questions.
When you are finished you will trade with a friend and answer each other’s questions. REMEMBER the question starters: What caused… What were the differences between… What was similar about… Compare… Provide a level appropriate text. It is a “Yellow Light Question” You must slow down and think about how to connect yourself with the text/author. Questions might begin with: What does the author mean by… What does the author probably think about… What is the author’s main point about… What is probably the author’s purpose…
