SAFETY RULES Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water before leaving the laboratory and any time they become contaminated with culture material. All personal belongings (books, purses, and backpacks) must be kept away from the work surface. Tie back long hair Keep hands away from the face at all times Gloves and goggles must be worn whenever students are working with microorganisms

SAFETY RULES Disinfect your lab bench before you start, if you spill culture, and before you leave the lab. If gloves become soiled, change immediately Always wash hands after removing gloves Do Not put pencils or pens in the mouth while working with microorganisms Cover and protect exposed wounds

SAFETY RULES Clean up your bench as you work, disposing used items properly. Labeling: Label all cultures and solutions properly with your name or initials, date, course / lab section, and experiment information. The experiment information may include the composition of the solution, identity of the culture, or the experiment number. Plates, Test tubes, Flasks Locate all fire extinguishers in the microbiology laboratory Locate the eyewash stations. Handle all bacterial cultures with EXTREME CAUTIONS!

SAFETY RULES All cultures, stocks, and other regulated wastes are decontaminated before disposal by an approved decontamination method such as autoclaving. Notify the instructor immediately if a culture has been spilled Place all materials in the appropriate containers upon completion of the laboratory investigation If there is a fire drill, turn off all flames and electrical equipment, and exit in an orderly fashion. Biosafety levels are determined by the National Institutes of Health and the Centers for Disease Control.
