Who are the Puritans? ~A group of people living in England who had problems with the Church of England & its ties to the government. ~ Many different groups of people had problems with Church of Eng… so what made them different? *Puritans believed that Church of England was beyond reform!

The Puritans were believers… ~ They believed that Bible was God’s true law ~They believed that Bible provided a plan for living they wanted to “purify” church & lives ~ Adam & Eve damned mankind, but good people would be “saved” in order to be “saved” Puritans MUST be self-reliant, industrious, humble & live simple lives

The Puritans of America They came with a purpose!! -large numbers fled to America (17,800 in 1640 to 106,000 in 1700) -God motivated everything they did & they knew the devil was everywhere!

What’s the difference between a Puritan & a Pilgrim?

The Puritans wanted to "purify" the Church of England. They did not want to move away from the church as the Pilgrims did. They just wanted to change some of its ways. The Puritans were treated badly in England because of their beliefs. The Puritans came to Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1630. Some Puritans thought their leaders were acting just as badly as the King of England. The group broke apart because of this.
