INL Education Programs Mission: Enable INL researchers to engage pre-college and university faculty, students and facilities in R&D, employee education, nuclear workforce development, and revitalization of nuclear science and engineering education.

Approaches to Revitalizing Nuclear Science and Engineering Education and Training Utilize a network with five national and three Idaho universities Enable increased university participation in research at INL and promote free flow of researchers both ways University research and education programs aligned with the mission of the INL Partner with universities and industry to address energy workforce needs Modernize educational materials

INL 2007 Education Impacts in Idaho ~ $2.5M Employee Ed contracts (U of I, ISU, BSU) $200K/yr BEA commitment for K-12 (Mini-grants, FIRST Robotics, PLTW at Skyline HS in IF…) $173K education outreach (Sho-Ban HS, EITC, GIANTS…) $263K for pre-college events (like Scholastic Tournament, HS & teacher internships…) ~ $560K/yr for about 140 interns who are Idaho residents ~ $1.2M in research contracts with Idaho universities ~ $1M in other Idaho university research thru CAES Plus others totaling over $6M per year in Idaho

Summary INL has a central role in revitalizing nuclear science and engineering education Universities are important partners for the success of the Laboratory Pre-college programs are also important to INL’s Education Programs, now and in the future
