2 SMC Prototype 2 11/12/2008 we wound our second prototype magnet. This used copper cable and s-glass produced by JPS with a high temperature sizing. This was a double pancake magnet with 2 end spacers. The island and spacers were made from Titanium without any surface coatings.
3
3 Half the cable was used for the upper layer, this wrapped with glass and then held in place above the island. This rotated with the mandrel as the magnet was wound.
4
4 The joggle was formed by hand using this tool.
5
5 The cable was fed into the transition on the island and then clamped in place.
6
6 The cable was then wound round the island and the spacers were added.
7
7 The tail from the lower layer was clamped in place.
8
8 The cable for the upper layer was moved from the support structure and placed on the winding machine.
9
9 The upper layer was then wound.
10
10 Problems. The glass covering the transition was too fragile. We had to cover it with Kapton tape to hold it together. We need to find a way of making the transition that doesn’t damage the glass or need Kapton tape.
11
11 More than 1 reel of glass tape was needed. This was joined with Kapton tape. We need to find a way of joining glass tape that will pass electrical tests after heat treatment.
12
12 The upper spacers were put in upside down. This means that the upper layer is not the correct shape. Next time we will engrave markings on the spacers to clearly indicate which way up they need to go.

14 Prototype 3 We aim to make the next prototype in March 2008. –This prototype will be made from copper cable but will be heat treated. –The spacers and the islands will be made of Titanium with an Alumina coating. Preparation: - Test better method of making the cable transitionreducing damage to glass tape - Trial glass tape joining ideas
