3 Reading strategies are used to HELP YOU to understand and comprehend what you are reading. Reading strategies are used to HELP YOU to understand and comprehend what you are reading. By using certain ‘methods’ or ‘tricks’, they will help you tremendously in your understanding of a text.

4 LET’S HAVE A LOOK…

5 Connecting Connecting/linking the story or text with other stories, movies, current events, personal experiences, etc… In other words, what does the text remind you of?

6 Creating Mental Images What vivid images are created in your mind? VISUALIZE Strong imagery!!!!

7 Questioning Simply put, what questions did you have about the story/text while reading? Simply put, what questions did you have about the story/text while reading?

8 Inferring MAKING PREDICTIONS and INFERENCES based on clues from the text.

9 When we INFER we are drawing our own conclusion based on what the text is suggesting or implying. When we INFER we are drawing our own conclusion based on what the text is suggesting or implying. 11 SUMMARIZING/Synthesizing Making summaries of what you have read. Explaining the story or text in your own words. You do this all the time! Every time you summarize a great movie, TV show, book, or real life event you are synthesizing!!!!

12 Determining for Importance What parts of the story or text did you recognize as being MORE important than others? What parts of the story or text did you recognize as being MORE important than others? Certain parts of the story carry more weight and are more integral for the development of the plot, characters, themes, climax, etc…

13 We will be using these strategies throughout the ENTIRE year, as you should be using these strategies OUTSIDE the classroom in your independent reading. I will continuously be using these terms in our class, so you must become familiarized with them and what is being asked of you to do with them.
