Absolute dating (chronometric or calendar dating ) - -process of determining a specific date for an archaeological site or artifact Radiometric dating - technique used to date materials based on knowledge of the decay rates of naturally occurring isotopes, and the current abundances.
2
The half-life of a quantity subject to exponential decay is the time required for the quantity to decay to half of its initial value.
3
Let N(t) be the amount of an element left (after decay) at time t. tN(t) 0 N0N0N0N0 1 N 0 *(1/2) 2 N 0 *(1/2) 2 3 N 0 *(1/2) 3 4 N 0 *(1/2) 4
4
We calculated the amount of a quantity N(t) left after any period of time t to be N(t) = N 0 (1/2) t where N 0 is the initial amount of the quantity.
5
N(t) = N 0 (1/2) t What happens to the amount of the quantity as t gets larger and larger? N(t) = N 0 (1/2) t the quantity decays exponentially as t gets larger and larger
6
How does an exponential function compare with a linear function? Do they grow at similar rates? Which grows faster? 2x2x 2*x 2x2x
