Cheesy, Predictable, and Bad Photo Alert Be discerning- just because it has color doesn’t mean it’s good. Make sure you choose a strong subject with excellent compositional choices and remember this is an art project- not a phone app. Try not to insult the viewer with a cliché project. These photos can look incredibly cheesy and poor if little to no thought is involved. Be discerning- just because it has color doesn’t mean it’s good. Tips on doing spot color well… Choose the right photo. This is the hardest part. Will the image benefit from selective color? Choose an image that has one element that already stands out from the background. Make sure that the colored subject is indeed the focus of the image. Make sure that the effect isn’t drawing attention away from the subject. Select a bright color. To get the full effect of the technique the subject needs to be a bright color so that it doesn’t blend in with the black/white/grey background. Primary colors (red, yellow, and blue) are a great place to start, as are highly saturated secondary colors (green, orange, and purple). Choose the right photo. This is the hardest part. Tips on doing spot color well… Use a single color. Using more than one color can cause confusion as to what the subject is supposed to be. Using one color or colors that are similar in hue helps keep your composition focused. Make the subject large - at least ¼ of the photo. The colorized subject should be the main focus of the image and it should fill the frame. Using a tiny speck of color in an otherwise monochrome image doesn’t make very much impact. Tips on doing spot color well… Keep the color localized. If you are colorizing multiple areas make sure that they are all in the same proximity. Having colored elements spread across the scene cause the viewer to lose focus on the intended subject. http://masteringphoto.com/tips-on-using-selective-color/
