Edvard Munch P.O.B Lotan, Norway Style: Expressionism What is he known for: Munch is famous for painting images that portray feelings of anxiety, love, and depression. He painted “The Scream” which has been a world wide recognized image. As a child, his mother died, his sister died, and most of his siblings became mentally ill. He later was quoted to saying” I inherited two of mankind’s most frightful enemies-consumption and insanity. His early influences were Van Gogh and Gauguin because of the colors used. His obsessions with fear and death came from reading Edgar Allen Poe.

Death Bed 1895, oil on Canvas Description 1. Munch shows a death scene where everyone is mourning a death by showing pale faces, black suits and a room lit by candle lights. However, they face the truth as the woman in the back is looking at you: death will come to everyone sooner or later.

In his diary Munch wrote: "I was walking along the street with two friends - the sun was going down - I felt a touch of melancholy. Suddenly the color of the sky changed to blood-red. I stopped walking and leaned against a fence feeling tired to death ... I stood there trembling with fear - and I felt how a long unending scream was going through the whole of nature."

The Scream Description 2. The Scream is the most famous painting by Munch. It is the essential symbol of anxiety. An agonizing figure is painted as a skull. It represent the universal anxiety of mankind. Munch painted himself on a bridge with two friends but then he stopped walking and became extremely tired. The sky is red and feelings of sadness has given Munch a sensation of fear.
