Safety in Horticulture
Why is it important to have safety in horticulture?
6
Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS)
Greenhouses use a great deal of chemicals Sheet containing information about the safe use of a chemical and the steps to take in case of an accident. Usually greenhouses have a notebook full of MSDS materials or a readily available computer disk with the information
7
Hazards in Horticulture
Framework 2.3
8
Potential Hazards Chemicals-Some chemicals are hazardous, could burn body parts or cause other bodily harm if not used correctly Organisms-Living plants, animals, and other organisms can cause disease and injury. It is important to know the risks before they are encountered. Fire and heat-hot plates and open flames can cause burns, or potential of wide spread fire Sharps- can cut. These items can include broken test tubes, microscope slides and other equipment.
9
Potential Hazards Hand Tools-Never use a tool for a job that it wasn’t designed to do. Wear proper protection Power Tools-Know the tools’ hazards and wear proper equipment Tractors and equipment-Make sure equipment is in good condition. Avoid unstable areas Engines and motors-Watch moving parts, know how to use them Electricity-shock, injury, death, GFCI
10
Importance of Personal Safety
Framework 2.4
11
Personal Protective Equipment
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is safety equipment used to protect from injury. Protects eyes Protects hearing Protects the respiratory system Protects skin Protects feet PPE should always be used when working with chemicals or around equipment
12
General Safety Rules Always use personal protective equipment
Identify potential hazards Learn practices that reduce risks of hazards Always follow safe practices Read and follow instructions Keep equipment in good condition Remove hazards Alert other people to hazards
13
General Safety Rules Never take unnecessary risk
Know the steps to take in case of an accident Have a telephone nearby and emergency numbers posted Place well-stocked first-aid kits near potential hazards
14
Weiner Ag Department Personal Safety List
