2 DO NOW! Read the question below. Jot down whatever comes to mind. Then, grab a dry-erase marker and write your response. This can be a phrase, full sentence, and you may also pose a question to someone else’s response.  What is happiness?

3 MODERNISM & MODERNITY Modernism: literary / cultural movement in the arts (1890s-1945) *High point: 1910-1920 Modernity: the quality or condition of being modern Characteristics: industrialism, urbanism, development of science  New technology and the horrifying events of both world wars (particularly WWI) made many people question the future of humanity  WHAT WAS BECOMING OF THE WORLD?  Modernist literature spoke on the self and consciousness. Instead of progress, Modernist writers saw cold machinery and increased capitalism, which alienated the individual and led to loneliness.

4 MODERNIST’S RESPONSE TO MODERNITY  To achieve the emotions of alienation, most modernist fiction was written in 1 st person. Whereas earlier when literature had a clear beginning, middle, and end, the Modernist story was often more of a stream of consciousness.  Stream of consciousness: a person’s thoughts and conscious reactions to events, perceived as a continuous flow

5 ERNEST MILLER HEMINGWAY 1899-1961 Part of “The Lost Generation” Won the Nobel Prize in Literature Saw violence and death first-hand as an ambulance drive in WWI His protagonists were strong, silent men who often dealt awkwardly with women His wartime experiences formed the basis for his works "When you go to war as a boy you have a great illusion of immortality. Other people get killed; not you... Then when you are badly wounded the first time you lose that illusion and you know it can happen to you."

6 HEMINGWAY’S WRITING STYLE Read “Handout 3: Hemingway’s Writing Style” silently to yourselves. Once you’ve finished reading, turn the paper over.

7 HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE HEMINGWAY’S WRITING STYLE? Turn your paper back over to the front. In one full sentence, describe Hemingway’s writing style with three different adjectives. Now tell your shoulder partner what you wrote.

Considered a modernist text because the linear stories are broken up with fragments Hybrid literary form – RADICAL FOR THE TIME! Pay close attention to the protagonist, as well as how Hemingway portrays the male psyche
