Characteristics of Acrylic Paints Water-based (Mimic oil paints without mess & toxicity.) Dries quickly. *Sometimes good, sometimes not. Very versatile – thick or thin application. Texture & consistency can be modified. Lends itself to MIXED MEDIA. Final finish of the piece can be altered with varnish and thus the finished painting does not need to be framed behind glass.

7 FACTORS: 1.Quality 2.Color 3.Permanence 4.Viscosity 5.Tube/Jar 6.Drying Time 7.Brands
6
1. QUALITY Artists’ Quality (“Professional”) – often more expensive – high concentration of pigment therefore, more vibrant & smoother consistency. Student’s Quality – Budget friendly for beginners.
7
2. COLOR “Series 1” begin cheapest with “Series 7” being the most expensive. Titanium White Cadmium Yellow Medium Cadmium Red Medium Alizarin Crimson Phthalo Green Phthalo Blue Burnt Sienna Ivory Black

3. PERMANENCE Often called Lightfastness, refers to the ability of the pigment in the paint to resist gradual fading when exposed to light. Pigments that fade over time are often called fugitive colors. At the right are lightfastness standards you would typically see on paints. **** or AA = Extremely permanent colors *** or A = Durable colors. ** or B = Moderately durable colors. * or C = Fugitive Colors ATSM I = Excellent Lightfastness ATSM II = Very Good Lightfastness ATSM III = Not Sufficiently Lightfast

4. VISCOSITY Refers to the consistency or thickness of the paint. Body acrylics – thick consistency better for mixing & blending. Fluid acrylics – thinner and better for detail work, staining, watercolor and dry-brush work.
10
5. TUBE OR JAR??? Tubes – small and portable. Paste-like. Jars – Save money buying more paint at once. Thicker. (Fluid acrylics – come in bottles. )

6. DRYING TIME Acrylics dry quickly… Use a retarding medium or open acrylics (that are manufactured with a retardant built in.
