A commutative monoid without zero divisors can be considered within the commutative group it generates. 1957 Grothendieck To a commutative monoid M associate a commutative group K(M), unique up to isomorphism, and a canonical monoid homomorphism  :M  K(M) such that for any commutative group G, any monoid homomorfism f: M  G factors in a unique way as f: M  K(M)  G.
