3. Seminar Rules When asking questions please raise your hand (type ?). Please do not start side conversations. Please do not interject “I agree” or “good point”. This clutters the seminar. Don’t worry about typos. Be clear as you can and refrain from slang – Use proper English.

4. Expectations I expect for you to read all required material before entering the seminar. I expect for you to participate in the seminar when questions are posed. Be prepared to discuss the theories of management and the US health care system

5. Theories of Management Management theory is concerned with a set of behaviors and thoughts of how a business could achieve its goals and objectives (Nixon, 2003). Theories: Modernism vs. Postmodernism

6. Modernism Refers to basic assumptions, beliefs, and values. Relies on logical reasoning Optimistic about the future, and believes in progress Embraces humanist values (Neuman, 2006).

7. Postmodernism Integrative approach to management Creating organizational structure Recognition of the role of power and politics in the organization.

8. Management Functions Planning: deciding in advance about the future. Organizing: deciding how best to group organizational resources. Leading: supervisor exercise to get the best and most out of subordinates. Controlling: checks performance against standards. (Dunn, 2002).
