SURA IT Committee & Regional CASA Meeting “SURAgrid Partnership” Sheraton Four Points 1201 K Street, NW Washington, DC March 7, 2006 Jerry P. Draayer SURA President and CEO

Non-profit consortium of 62 colleges and universities in 16 southern states and DC, with special provisions for outside the region members, i.e., MIT Incorporated in 1980 to compete for the DOE’s first “major” nuclear physics particle accelerator in the U.S. – the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF), now the Jefferson Lab – in Newport News, Virginia “Crown Jewel”

Accomplishments at JLab  Designed and constructed ~$600M 6-GeV accelerator with 3 experimental halls, on time and within budget  Vision of Jim McCarthy from UVa who “garnered support” among his colleagues to bring “unique” facility to Southeast  First ever major superconducting accelerator that is now the “standard” worldwide  Currently managing and operating JLab in exemplary manner …  DOE has rated SURA/JLab’s overall performance Outstanding over the nine years of current performance based contract  Grown the field - 70 new faculty positions in SURA institutions; 1/4 PhD production in US; helped launch PhD program at Hampton U, etc.  Partnering with Computer Sciences Corporation (CSC) to bring “best-in- class” science and operations to JLab  Approval (February 2006) for upgrade to 12-GeV plus a 4th experimental hall for study of exotic mesons, etc.  Scientific program ranked in 3rd cluster of DOE’s 20-year roadmap  Poised to probe one of natures closest held secrets - quark confinement

Mission  Foster excellence in scientific research  Strengthen the scientific and technical capabilities of the Nation and of the Southeast  Provide outstanding training opportunities for the next generation of scientists and engineers

Enabling Integration of National Coastal Observing Initiatives (http://twiki.sura.org)http://twiki.sura.org Goal To create an open-access, distributed national laboratory for scientific research and coastal operations. Purpose To promote effective and rapid fusion of observed data with numerical models, and facilitate rapid dissemination of information to operational, scientific, and public and private users. Importance Over the next decade, a major national investment is expected in building varied components of a national ocean and coastal observing system. By facilitating a seamless integration for this emerging, multi-faceted ocean observing system, SCOOP will ensure that the value and effectiveness of these investments are maximized. US Ocean Action Plan SURA Coastal Ocean Observing and Prediction (SCOOP) Program

OpenIOOS.org The Southeast Region OpenIOOS had real-time storm-surge and wave predictions before Katrina made landfall.

SURAgrid Initiative  Building a SURA regional grid community & infrastructure  SURAgrid Portal and Bridge Certificate Authority in operation  23 SURAgrid participating institutions within and beyond SURA region  Sharing compute resources: -600+ nodes 1.4TFlops -https://gridportal.sura.orghttps://gridportal.sura.org  Seeking agency funding and corporate partnerships For more information: http://www.sura.org/suragridhttp://www.sura.org/suragrid SURAgrid: PARTICIPANTS GSU UAB UMI UVA USC TACC ULL TAMU UFL OleMiss GMU Tulane UARK TTU SC LSU GPN UKY ODU UNC NC State Vanderbilt UAH

SURA External Relations Program  Federal -Support to increase DOE Office of Science & JLab funding -FY06 SCOOP Funding: $2.5M – NOAA in Senate / ONR funding in conference committee -New Partnership with EVMS – Laser Bioscience Center  State -SGA policy support of IT and federal lab funding -Commonwealth increased JLab investment to $1M  Private Sector Partnerships / Sponsorships -Coalition support of National Innovation Initiative - “Rising Above the Gathering Storm” / Augustine Commission Report
