Bell Ringer 03/26 o Look at all 5 classes data from Friday’s Trait Survey and answer the following: 1.What did the classes have in common? 2.What differed between the classes? 3.Based off of the data, what do you think we would see if we did this activity with the entire school?

Probability and Punnett Squares

Probability o How likely it is that an event will occur o You can calculate probability by dividing the number of desired outcomes by the total number of possible outcomes o The odds of getting heads is a one in two chance 1: 2 or ½ o The odds of getting tails is a one in two chance 1:2 or ½

On a 6 sided dice, what is the probability of getting a 2? 1:6 or 1/6 On a 6 sided dice, what is the probability of getting a 1 or 4? 2:6 or 2/6

Probability and Genetics o Probability can be used to help us understand what type of traits an offspring could have. o We use something know as punnett squares to find the potential alleles that an offspring can obtain from its parents.

Bell Ringer 3/27 1.What are the 3 different possible allele combinations that an organism can have? 2.Dominant alleles are represented by what type of letter? 3.How is receiving alleles from mom and dad similar to tossing a coin?

What Does A Punnett Square Show Us? 1. All of the potential allele combinations that an offspring can have for a trait. 2. It is NOT showing us 4 different offspring. 3. It is only showing the probability of what alleles 1 offspring could potentially have based off of the mom and dads allele combinations. FF f f FfFf FfFf FfFf FfFf

TT T t t T tt Tall Genotype: Phenotype: Homozygous Dominant Homozygous Recessive Heterozygous Homozygous: Dominant: Recessive: Heterozygous: Observed trait of an organism that masks the recessive form of a trait. Observed trait of an organism only when the dominant allele is not present. When there are two identical alleles for a trait. When there are two different alleles for a trait. Physical appearance of an organism Combination of genes in an organism.

Bell Ringer 3/28 Black Fur is Dominant to Brown Fur. Draw out a Punnett square and tell me the possible genotypes and phenotypes that the offspring could have if a Heterozygous Male and a Heterozygous female mated.

DO NOT FORGET!! 1. HOMEWORK: Monohybrid cross worksheet DUE: TOMORROW 3/29 2. EXTRA CREDIT OPPORTUNITY Channel 11 at 9pm “Cracking Your Genetic Code” 1 page reflection (up to 50 points) DUE: No later than This Friday March 30th

QUIZ TOMORROW 1. Dominant and Recessive 2. Genotype and Phenotype 3. Hybrid and Purebred 4. Homozygous Dominant, Homozygous Recessive, Heterozygous 5. Drawing a Punnett square based off of information I give you about the parents 6. Percentages of probable Genotypes and Phenotypes of offspring based off of a Punnett square
