2 Goals Content Goal- To look for the timeless theme, work on character development, and evaluate characters’ decisions. Language Goal- To support answers using text-based, cited details (10.W.9) and to determine word meanings using context and/or word patterns (10.L.4). (+2)

3 Pre-teaching Vocabulary
Contextual sentences- write each word in a sentence that shows the word’s definition. You do not need to copy the definition if you define it within the sentence. (+6) annals- (noun) historical records or chronicles Historical annals, the yearbooks of LHS, show that the first graduates preferred Duran Duran to Led Zeppelin. dire- (adjective) calling for quick action; urgent detained- (verb) kept in custody impediment- (noun) something standing in the way of something else hindrance- (noun) people or things in the way, obstacles sarcasm- (noun) a cutting, ironic remark intended to wound; a form of wit used to ridicule

4 Pre-reading brainstorm and discussion
Brainstorm a list of famous best friends. Share your list of famous best friends with your quad. Share your quad’s favorite best friends with the full class. Remember to participate effectively in collaborative discussions (10.SL.1).

5 “Reteller” & Literary Term
Write an interesting detail about or translator/ author and define myth using information on page 94. (+2) William F. Russell- myth- “We read myths today because they offer timeless answers to timeless questions” (Prentice Hall 94).

6 During Reading Number the back of your vocabulary and brainstorm paper 1-13 (writing on every other line). Each number represents a paragraph. For each paragraph summarize the plot in that paragraph. (+13) The story begins on page 102. Setting: Siracusa, Sicily, Italy
