It may seem boring, but… Simple is good Know your audience –Varied - we may or may not have any idea what you’re talking about! –It’s summer! We’re busy with all kinds of things! –Which means - we may be easily distracted! So, keep it simple!

NYS Department of Environmental Conservation Facility Description Where is the facility located? –City/County –Setting – rural, suburban, industrial, urban Who works there? What does the facility do? Who does the facility buy from? Sell to or serve? Environmental significance – impacts and benefits

NYS Department of Environmental Conservation Project Background General project type – stormwater, recycling, rainwater harvesting, air pollution reduction What was the impetus for the project, i.e. why are you there?! –Solving a problem? –Reducing costs? –Corporate mission?

NYS Department of Environmental Conservation Project Description Describe the Project or the Problem Summarize How you Tackled the Project –Research – web, vendor materials, other info –Ran models –System installation –Gathered data –System modifications –Gathered more data –Cost analysis –Communication with plant staff (or others)

Provide more project details: –What did you do? –What did you find – summarize the data –What does the data mean? –Did the data confirm your expectations? –Any surprises? Any big glitches? –What was the outcome – what is management going to do with your findings/recommendations?

From the above lists, pick one thing and spend more time on it, such as: –Surprising find (good or bad!) –A really nice outcome –Next steps to get to an outcome –A problem you overcame –Anything that might be helpful to other facilities, other projects

NYS Department of Environmental Conservation Some Guidelines on Providing Details… Keep it Positive!!!! –No blame! –No dissing the boss or DEC! Tell it like it is, so others can learn – this is the real world! Look for details that might be relevant to others

Name the facility again! “My summer at …” Project steps - “It took awhile to get the system installed, but then…” Overcame a problem – “The posters were great at overcoming employee resistance…” Success! “By completing my water reuse we believe the facility will save X MG of water”

NYS Department of Environmental Conservation Rules of Thumb Approx 2 min/slide (on average) Use the slides as “talking points” to keep yourself focused! Watch font size – read from across room? Do basic powerpoint only – room AV equipment can’t handle sound

NYS Department of Environmental Conservation Rules of Thumb Talk to the audience, not the screen! Talk slowly and don’t rush, people need time to listen and digest your info Always have your powerpoint on CD as a backup!
