www.rf.no Force Workshop “Future directions in Petroleum Research”, April 8 - 9. 2002 “Cooperation between Universities and Research Institutes for the Oil Industry” Rolv Rommetveit RF-Rogaland Research

www.rf.no VISION Universities do basic R&D Universities and Institutes do Strategic R&D, often in cooperative projects Quality candidates for the Industry are educated in the University – Institute cooperation as well as in the Institutes Institutes do User-oriented R&D. Use University Competence if needed. Institutes do demonstration, prototype development and software development in cooperation with Oil Industry R&D Institute - University Cooperation

www.rf.no History Petroleum Research Centre (PRC) formed in 1983 –115 MNOK each to Stavanger and Trondheim as well as project funds –Built Rogalandsforskning and IKU –Stavanger and Trondheim chosen because the Civil Engineer education in Petroleum was placed in these cities PRC should also provide competence development for the oil industry A natural link was promoted : University – Institute – Oil Industry R&D Institute - University Cooperation

www.rf.no University Characteristics theoretical approach individualistic attitudes not used to time schedules / deadlines communication between sciences not always optimal. not updated on the needs of the industry commercialization often “one-man show” R&D Institute - University Cooperation

www.rf.no Institutes Characteristics Historically formed to be a link from university to industry (SINTEF, RF) Perform applied research; between university and industry used to cooperate both ways ; to academia and industry talk both “languages” used to time schedules and budget constraints; a project type organization cross-science/topic cooperation is the normal commercialization is frequent. Have tradition for and possibilities for this. Effective organization (marketing, cost control) R&D Institute - University Cooperation

www.rf.no University and Institutes are perfect match (ideally) Some examples follows: R&D Institute - University Cooperation

Professors worked on these projects Responsibilities : –Universities : Ph.D education –Institutes : Applied research, modeling, prototype development (with industry), software development R&D Institute - University Cooperation

www.rf.no Safety and Risk management Mixture of Industry and NFR (PhD projects) funding Partners : RF, HiS Organization : –Institutes managed projects. Professors worked on these projects Responsibilities : –HiS : Ph.D education –Institute : Applied research, modeling, software development R&D Institute - University Cooperation

www.rf.no Well Technology for Deep,Hot Wells and other Extreme Well Types NFR Funding (STP) Partners : RF, HiS Organization : –Institutes managed project. Professors worked on these projects Responsibilities : –HiS : Ph.D education –Institute : PhD tutoring, applied research, modeling, software development R&D Institute - University Cooperation

www.rf.no Inverse Problems and Parameter estimation NFR Funding (SIP) Partners : RF, UiB Organization : –Institutes managed project. Professors worked on these projects Responsibilities : –UiB : Ph.D education –Institute : Applied research, modeling, software development R&D Institute - University Cooperation

www.rf.no Complex Wells NFR Funding (SIP) Partners : RF, UiB, HiS Organization : –Institute managed project. Professors from HiS and UiB worked on these projects Responsibilities : –UiB : Ph.D education –HiS : Ph.D education –RF : Ph.D tutoring, applied research, modeling, software development R&D Institute - University Cooperation

www.rf.no Well - Reservoir Interaction NFR Funding (SIP) Partners : RF, UiB Organization : –Institute manage project. Professors from and UiB work on the project Responsibilities : –UiB : Ph.D education –RF : Ph.D tutoring, applied research, modeling, software development R&D Institute - University Cooperation

www.rf.no 3D Tectonic Modeling NFR Funding (SIP) Partners : RF, UiB, HiS Organization : –Institute manage project. Professors from HiS and UiB work on the project Responsibilities : –UiB : Ph.D education –RF : Ph.D tutoring, applied research, modeling, software development R&D Institute - University Cooperation

Professors from UiB work on the project Responsibilities : –UiB : Ph.D education –RF : Ph.D tutoring, applied research, modeling, software development R&D Institute - University Cooperation

www.rf.no Software Development for oil industry Industry funding Partners : RF, oil companies Organization : –Institute manage projects. Professors from HiS and UiB work on projects Responsibilities : –RF : applied research, modeling, software development, commercialization Significance: –Advanced methods from Universities rapidly applied in useful products. Added value created. R&D Institute - University Cooperation

www.rf.no Statoil - HiS / RF cooperation Statoil funding; Partners HiS and RF Organization : –RF-HiS cooperation –RF manage projects for HiS. Professors from HiS work on projects Responsibilities : –HiS : Ph.D education, –RF : PhD tutoring, applied research, modeling –Laboratory tests a cooperative effort. Significance: –Builds a “symbiose” between RF&HiS for strategic petroleum technology and competence development R&D Institute - University Cooperation

www.rf.no Increased Oil Recovery Design of Advanced Wells and Reservoir Steering Geomodeling Reservoir Characterization / Well Reservoir Interaction Risk Management in Drilling & Well Operations Modeling, Monitoring and Control of Well Construction Operations Strategic ProgramsStrategic Programs University cooperationUniversity cooperation PhDsPhDs Hardware products Software products

www.rf.no What are the obstacles hindering cooperation today ? How to release the potential ? What are the success factors? R&D Institute - University Cooperation

www.rf.no Long Term national funding available Industry funding is then released Development of joint projects (institutes and univ.) are promoted Projects directed versus industry needs –long term, strategic technology needs Institutes given project management as main rule –allows parties to focus on their strong sides Flexible project model –projects within Programs can be given to Institutes, universities or SMB companies; no strict rules R&D Institute - University Cooperation for Oil Industry; success factors

www.rf.no Good relations built between parties –Joint Msc. and PhD tutoring –mutual part time assignments –build / utilize good personal relationships Build networks between Universities, Institutes and Industry to stimulate projects and activities Cooperation should take into account the specific needs of the universities –candidate education (Msc and PhD) –economic incentive both to the institution and individual R&D Institute - University Cooperation for Oil Industry; success factors
