What is the Grapefruit Diet?
The Grapefruit Diet is a FAD diet that has been in the US ever since the 1930’s The diet is based around the assumption that grapefruits have a special fat burning enzyme in them The diet has many variations and it usually lasts days with a 2 day rest period in between With the diet one can lose up to 10lbs in 10 days Also known as the Hollywood Diet

The Common Variation Breakfast Lunch Dinner
½ grapefruit or 6oz of unsweetened grapefruit juice 2 eggs 2 bacon slices Lunch Meat (any kind, as much as you want) Salad (any kind of dressing) Dinner Meat or fish (any kind, as much as you want) Vegetables (red, yellow or green - any type of seasoning is ok)

Eat foods that are high in protein, fat, and/or cholesterol. Eat grapefruit or the juice with every meal Eat until you're full so you don’t eat junk food. No eating between meals! Limit the amount of caffeine that you intake. Caffeine disturbs the fat burning process No Carbohydrates! They soak up the enzymes, reducing their effect.

Grapefruit Diet Vs. Healthy Eating
This diet is one of the better diets as far as diets go, but it is still a diet and is unhealthy for you. One main problem is that you are restricted from eating carbohydrates. These are essential for our well-being. They provide us with energy throughout the day do carry out our activities. Another thing is that nobody on this diet can eat between meals, which depending on what you do, can be very bad. Brierley Wright, M.S., R.D says that if one gets hungry between meals, they should eat more meals or healthy snacks. This will prevent people from overeating when they do eat, However, this diet says to eat 3 meals per day and eat as much as you can, which is very bad for a person. Other than that, this diet provides you with the freedom to eat as much healthy food as you want.

Conclusion In conclusion, the Grapefruit Diet is an unhealthy choice for youth and all age groups. Due to it’s cons overwhelming the pros, it is highly recommended people avoid this diet for long term use as well as short term. The diet restricts your bodies needs as it prohibits one from eating the carbs they need to function and eating too much protein causing harm to the digestive system. Similarly, the high citrus content will also cause great harm to ones digestive functions.
