Muscle Cars By Chris Newland

Chevrolet Camaro There's nothing quite like the style or the sound of an honest, powerful sports car. And right from day one – in the fall of 1966 – the Chevrolet Camaro never compromised. This classic Chevy is the V8-powered, rear- wheel-drive muscle car for millions of enthusiasts. Here are some milestones in this purebred's lineage.

Ford GT 500 The Shelby Mustang first appeared in 1968 when Ford Motor Company bought the "Shelby" name from Carrol Shelby and added it to their proprietary marque "Mustang". The 1965, 1966 and 1967 Shelby's were known as "Shelby Cobras" and were a series of Ford Mustangs which were specially modified by Carroll Shelby's company and sold as a series. The program was factory-sponsored by Ford to compete with the Corvette, also factory-sponsored by Chevrolet, neither of which could be built for the sales price charged.

Holden Monaro The impact of the first Monaro will not be forgotten by anyone who swivelled in the street to watch it go by or pressed against the showroom window for a longer look. A product of a brand new Holden design studio, the HK Monaro coupe took a spectacular design direction that was profoundly influenced by automotive trends in the USA.

Pontiac Firebird The Pontiac Firebird was a pony car built by the Pontiac division of General Motors between 1967 and 2002. The Firebird was introduced the same year its platform-sharing cousin, the Chevrolet Camaro. This coincided with the release of the Mercury Cougar, which shared its platform with another well-known pony car, the Ford Mustang. The vehicles were, for the most part, powered by various V8 engines of different GM divisions. While primarily Pontiac-powered until 1977, Firebirds were built with several different engines from nearly every GM division until 1982 when all Pontiac engines were dropped in favour of corporate units.

Dodge Charger The General Lee is the automobile driven by the Duke cousins Bo and Luke in the television series The Dukes of Hazzard and was rented to them by Andrew Lane for filming. It is known for the chases and stunts, especially high jumps, in almost every episode, and for having the doors welded up, leaving the Dukes to climb in and out through the windows. The car appears in all but one episode of the series (the third broadcast, Mary Kaye's Baby). The car's name is a reference to the Confederate General Robert E. Lee, and indeed the vehicle embodies the Southern United States, bearing as it does a Confederate flag on its roof and a horn which plays a bar from the song “Dixie". The Dodge Charger was a model of car produced by Dodge. The 1966 to 1974 Chargers were sporty models based on the Chrysler B platform that could be ordered with high-performance options. The 1975 to 1978 Chargers were based on the Chrysler Cordoba. The Dodge Charger R/T was one of the largest muscle cars available in the 1970s.
