Doomsday Book William needed money to run this country and to live in luxury. He appointed Sheriffs to count every pig, person, farm, rooster, and horse in the kingdom. This was the first census since Roman times. This Census told him how much to charge in taxes. The Sheriffs had to collect the taxes as well. They were not well loved. This official report was called the Doomsday Book. It is really 2 books. One is called the Little Domesday and the other the Great Domesday Even more important this book tells us who was loyal to William the Conqueror.
