Overview : *Introduction to anime. *Comparison to American animation. *Reflections on Jap/US societies. *Future of the art.

What is anime? *Animated films that cover almost any genre. *Commonly has complex plots and storyline. *Characters tend to be well-developed. Multi- dimensional. *Many films contain symbolic observations of society. *Traditionally has a “pointy” artistic style for face and body.

American Animation * Based off of slapstick humor * Many films are remakes of children’s fairytales or are marketed towards kids. * Almost every animated film has sing-along songs that are childish in nature. * Very rarely are adult subjects confronted in American animation

Japanese Youth * Expected to grow up to become conservative. * Common for teens to be reckless and experimental. * Mass exposure to sexually explicit material * Unspoken rule: Do it, but don’t talk about it.

The Future of Anime * Japanese remakes being released in America. * Anime series being adopted by networks. * Computer animation opens new level of detail and realism. * Possible American anime?
