Calculating Averages in the Gradebook There are four ways to calculate averages: Weighted Categories Weighted Categories and Assignments Total Points Only Category Total Points

Weighted Categories Each assignment is converted to a percentage. Assignments are averaged within each category. Averages from each category are then multiplied by their given weight and added to find the term average.

Homework (Weight: 25) Quiz (Weight: 25) Exam (Weight: 50) HW1: 7 of 10 = 70% QZ1: 90 of 100 = 90% EX1: 90 of 100 = 90% HW2: 9 of 10 = 90% QZ2: 60 of 100 = 60% EX2: 90 of 100 = 90% HW3: 8 of 10 = 80% QZ3: 90 of 100 = 90% Homework average: (70+90+80)/3 = 80% Quiz average: (90+60+90)/3 = 80% Exam average: (90+90)/2 = 90% Weighted Categories

Homework (Weight: 25) Quiz (Weight: 25) Exam (Weight: 50) HW1: 7 of 10 = 70% QZ1: 90 of 100 = 90% EX1: 90 of 100 = 90% HW2: 9 of 10 = 90% QZ2: 60 of 100 = 60% EX2: 90 of 100 = 90% HW3: 8 of 10 = 80% QZ3: 90 of 100 = 90% Homework average: (70+90+80)/3 = 80% Quiz average: (90+60+90)/3 = 80% Exam average: (90+90)/2 = 90% Term average is calculated in this way: (80 x 25/100) + (80 x 25/100) + (90 x 50/100) = 85% Weighted Categories

Weighted Categories and Assignments Each assignment is converted to a percentage. Assignments are multiplied by their given weight and then added to calculate the category average. Category averages are then multiplied by their given weight and added to get the term average.

Homework (Weight: 25) Quiz (Weight: 25) Exam (Weight: 50) HW1 (weight = 1): 7 of 10 = 70% QZ1 (weight = 1): 90 of 100 = 90% EX1 (weight = 1): 90 of 100 = 90% HW2 (weight = 3): 9 of 10 = 90% QZ2 (weight = 1): 60 of 100 = 60% EX2 (weight = 2): 90 of 100 = 90% HW3 (weight = 1): 8 of 10 = 80% QZ3 (weight = 1): 90 of 100 = 90% Homework average: 70*(1/5) +90*(3/5) +80*(1/5) =84 % Quiz average: 90*(1/3) +60*(1/3) +90*(1/3) =80% Exam average: 90*(1/3) +90*(2/3) =90% Weighted Categories and Assignments

Homework (Weight: 25) Quiz (Weight: 25) Exam (Weight: 50) HW1 (weight = 1): 7 of 10 = 70% QZ1 (weight = 1): 90 of 100 = 90% EX1 (weight = 1): 90 of 100 = 90% HW2 (weight = 3): 9 of 10 = 90% QZ2 (weight = 1): 60 of 100 = 60% EX2 (weight = 2): 90 of 100 = 90% HW3 (weight = 1): 8 of 10 = 80% QZ3 (weight = 1): 90 of 100 = 90% Homework average: 70*(1/5) +90*(3/5) +80*(1/5) =84 % Quiz average: 90*(1/3) +60*(1/3) +90*(1/3) =80% Exam average: 90*(1/3) +90*(2/3) =90% Weighted Categories and Assignments Term average is calculated in this way: (84 x 25/100) + (80 x 25/100) + (90 x 50/100) = 86%

Total Points Only Assignments are NOT converted to percentages. All points a student receives for each assignment are added together. Total points possible for each assignment are added together. The term average for a student is the sum of the points earned divided by the sum of the points possible.
