Horse Racing ► Charles II was an avid supporter and helped to make horse racing popular amongst the nobles. ► Provides two forms of entertainment, betting on races and raising a thoroughbred to victory ► Horse racing is and was the bed rock in Britain's gambling sector, was mostly for the nobles ► With wealth comes free time, Nobles looked for entertaining ways to spend time

Boxing ► Boxing like horse racing has no definitive point of origin, it comes from competitive hand to hand combat ► The first recorded boxing match was in England in the 18 th century. ► The rules evolved from bare knuckle fighting with no referee and included reselling ► Boxing was an underground sport for the lower class, involved gamboling.

Tennis ► The sports birth is a long line of evolution ► Henry VII and Henry VIII were both enthusiastic admirers of the sport and encouraged the spread of the game in Britain ► In the 16-17 th century the game was played inside using walls to bounce the ball off of. ► The sport lost popularity in the 1700’s but in the 1850’s different rubber balls were experimented with, this made the game more exciting ► The game was then transferred to outdoor courts, a new set of rules followed

Billiards ► Originally played outside, similar to Croquet ► Once brought inside the table was made green to simulate the grass it was once played on ► It was played with mallets until the cue stick was invented in the late 1600’s ► Tables were expensive and only the rich could afford them, however there were communal tables in towns ► With industrialization came rubber for the banks, chalk for the cues and slate for the tables. By 1850 the table was at its current state now.

Cricket ► Started as a pass time in south east England for sheep farmers because of the short pasture grass ► First recorded game took place in 1646, the game became extremely popular in the 1700’s ► The games rules were not established until 1744, there were many variations to the rules ► In the 1760’s a new rule allowing pitchers to through it instead of rolling the ball ► The sport was spread to Britain's colonies like India and Australia were it remains popular

Football ► Soccer is a basic game that has been played for thousands of years in various forms ► Different cultures had variations on the game, it was played as early as 50 B.C. China ► Many English rulers like King Henry IV, Henry VIII and Queen Elizabeth vocalized their distaste in the sport and even banned it at times ► The sport gained English sanction in 1681, the first know rules were written in 1815 ► It quickly became not only Britain's favorite sport but billions of peoples around the world

EFSN Stephen Mighton, Braydon Campbell Most Historian did not bother to record sports and there origins because they were seen as insignificant. So most knowledge about sports is a blur in time with no definitive start and little information on ancient sports.
