3 Romanticism is defined as an artistic and intellectual movement originating in Europe in the very late 18th century and characterized by a heightened interest in nature, and the individual's expression of emotion and imagination.

4 Romanticism was associated with liberalism and radicalism, and significantly led to the growth of nationalism. The movement placed new emphasis on such emotions as anxiety, horror, terror, and awe— especially that which is experienced in confronting untamed nature.

8 Romanticism was more prominent in painting than in sculpture or architecture. Subjects for paintings were often taken from nature: with its uncontrollable power, unpredictability, and potential for enormous extremes. Biblical, historical, mythological, and supernatural subjects were also used.

9 Romantic art differed from place to place, even within the same country. In England, the dominant English romantic style can be found in Thomas Gainsborough's The Market Cart (1786)

21 Another French artist, Théodore Rousseau, led the Barbizon School. This was a group of landscape painters who depicted rural life. 1852

22 Théodore Rousseau’s most famous painting was “Edge of the Forest, Near the Gorges”

23 One group of artists that included Thomas Cole painted scenic views of upper New York State and came to be called the Hudson RiverSchool. Beginning in the 1820's American romantic artists painted landscapes that glorified the country's natural beauty. They were inspired by the optimism of a young, rapidly growing nation. Thomas Cole is best known for his series of paintings called : “The Voyage of Life”
