Spain’s Empire and European Absolutism King Philip II of Spain came to power during a time of religious and economic instability. He tried to use Spanish wealth to show their power and experience a golden age in the arts. Why might there have been “religious instability” in Europe? How could wealth show Spain’s power?

Critical Thinking Questions: 1.What non-religious factors might have provoked Philip II to send the armada against England? 2.What artistic limits might an artist such as Diego Velasquez have faced? 3.Why might readers still take an interest in the 400 year old novel, Don Quixote?

In the summer of 1588, King Philip II of Spain sent about 130 ships carrying about 19,000 sailors to the English Channel to attack the British. English warships, however, out-maneuvered the Spanish vessels and bombarded the Spanish Armada with their heavier long-range cannons.
