1 Technology Integration Lesson Planning
The Chick and the Duckling By Mirra Ginsburg

2 The Chick and the Duckling
This lesson is for grade K- English Language Arts, Mathematics and Science. ELAR- TEK (7)  Reading/Comprehension of Literary Text/Poetry. Students understand, make inferences and draw conclusions about the structure and elements of poetry and provide evidence from text to support their understanding. Students are expected to respond to rhythm and rhyme in poetry through identifying a regular beat and similarities in word sounds. Math- TEK (8)  Data analysis. The student applies mathematical process standards to collect and organize data to make it useful for interpreting information. The student is expected to: (A)  collect, sort, and organize data into two or three categories; Science- TEK (10)  Organisms and environments. The student knows that organisms resemble their parents and have structures and processes that help them survive within their environments. The student is expected to: (A)  sort plants and animals into groups based on physical characteristics such as color, size, body covering, or leaf shape; (B)  identify parts of plants such as roots, stem, and leaves and parts of animals such as head, eyes, and limbs;

3 Materials The Chick and the Duckling by Mirra Ginsburg (Book and Youtube) A large sheet of bulletin board paper with two intersecting circles drawn (Venn Diagram) Large individual pictures of a chick and a duckling. Place each in a circle of the diagram. Markers

4 Procedure Pre-activities
Students should have previous experience with Venn Diagrams and some knowledge of ducks and chicks. The teacher will begin the lesson by showing the YouTube video of the story The Chick and the Duckling by Mirra Ginsburg. After listening to the read aloud, the teacher can read the story to the children for better understanding. As the children recognize the pattern, they will probably join in. The teacher will lead a discussion of the book, focusing on how the chick and the duckling were alike/different. The teacher will then explain to the children that to see the comparisons more clearly, the class could make a Venn Diagram. If the class has not experienced this type of graphing, then more explanation would be required. Our class is familiar with the activity, so I would present it more as a review. The teacher would then place the paper with the diagram before the students and ask for observations about the chick and duckling. The students would decide if the characteristic described the chick, the duckling, or both. The teacher would write the students answers in the appropriate place as guided by the students. The lesson would continue in this manner, until students’ responses were exhausted.

5 Assessment Teacher observation of students’ participation.
The finished product (the diagram). Review discussion: Students explain how the chick and duckling are alike. How are they different?

6 What is the relative advantage of using technologies in this lesson?
Technology is needed for me to show the students the video about the story The Chick and the Duckling. Starting the lesson by using technology will be a great way to engage all students and provide them with a better understanding of the story. Once they watch the video, the teacher can then read the story to the students using the actual book.

7 Reflect on, assess, and describe you Tech-Pack for this situation?
Content What is known- I will know the content that is required for this lesson. Also, the materials for this lesson will need to be provided so that the students will have two different opportunities to hear the story. What must be learned- I will learn if students are able to take what they heard and use a Venn Diagram to correctly sort information. The objectives in this lesson may be too difficult, so I will have to make note as to what changes need to be made for the future. *It is important that teachers really try and model this process with students so they are familiar with how it works.

8 What are the objectives of the lesson plan?
Discuss concepts and information in a text to clarify and extend knowledge. Sort and classify objects by one attribute. Observe and describe the similarities and differences among animals including: Structure. Growth. Changes. Movement.

9 How will you assess your student’s accomplishment of the objective?
Teacher observation of students’ participation. The finished product (the diagram). Review discussion: Students explain how the chick and duckling are alike. How are they different?

10 What integration strategies are used in the lesson plan?
I like this lesson because it incorporates language arts, math and science into one lesson. This lesson can be used in one day or spread out throughout the week- depends on how much time you want to spend on each subject area.

11 How would you prepare the learning environment?
The teacher will need to have the YouTube video pulled up and even check for sound before the lesson begins. The Venn Diagram will need to be premade and available for students to easily read from where they are sitting. Students should have some prior experience with using a Venn Diagram. The teacher will need to have established a meeting place for students to sit and listen to the story so they will all be able to fully engage in the lesson.

12 How would you evaluate the success of this lesson in your classroom in order to determine revision needs? The teacher will need to continuously check for understanding. The teacher can do this by randomly asking students questions to check for comprehension. Those students who are struggling will then need to be pulled to the teacher table for extra one on one/small group time. I have learned that it is really beneficial to take notes after the lesson as to what went well or could use some improvement for future reference.
