John Mauchly Presented by: Shalena Thomas

Life and Education  Born August 30, 1907 and died January 8, 1980  Growing up in Chevy Chase, Maryland, he attend school in Washington DC, where his father was employed as a physicist in the Department of Terrestrial Magnetism at the Carnegie Institute.  In 1925, John was awarded a scholarship by the State of Maryland to allow him to attend Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. There he began to study engineering but his interest changed towards pure science and obtain his first degree in Physics. In 1932, he was awarded his doctorate and taught at several universities.

Life and Education cont.  By 1940, he was teaching physics at Ursinus College hear Philadelphia. There he became interested in developing electronic computers.  In 1941, he already had started to developed his own ideas on how to construct a better computer. No one seem to be interested except for an instructor, John Eckert, at Moore College. The two began to be close friends and discussed their ideas bout electronic computers.  Mauchly wrote an report on the design of an electronic computer that would be easier to use and allow results to be obtained much quicker than the Bush analyser

Invention: ENIAC  John Mauchly along with John Eckert collaborated in the construction of the Electronic Integrator and Computer (ENIAC). The machine was intended to be a general purpose one, but it was also designed for a very specific task, compiling tables for the trajectories of bombs and shells.  By 1946, the machine was used intensively, particularly on top secret problems associated with nuclear weapon. Von Neumann became eith the ENIAC and used it to solve systems of partial differential equations

Invention: BINAC  In October 1946, John Mauchly and John Eckert started up the Electronic Control Company which received and order from Northrop Aircraft Company to build the Binary Automatic Computer (BINAC). One of the major advances was that data was stored on magnetic tape than on a punched cards.

Invention: UNIVAC  The electronic control company became the Eckert- Mauchly Computer Corporation and received an order from the National Bureau of Standard to build the Universal Automatic Computer. It was the first computer to be produced commercially in the United States with only 46 UNIVACs being built. One of the major advances was an ability to handle both numerical and alphabetical information with equal success.

Awards  Harry M Goode Memorial Award, a medal and $2000 awarded by the Computer Society  He was elected a life member of the Franklin Institute, of National Academy of Engineering, and of the Society for the Advancement of Management.  IRE and Amercian Statistical Association in 1957 elected him as a fellow.  Received a honorary degrees from the University of Pennsylvania and from the Ursinus College  He also received the Philadelphia Award, the Emanual R Pione Award, the Potts Medal, and the Scott Medal
