Project 6: Undergraduate Activity Related to the UCI Libraries Azia Foster. Andrew Zaldivar. Scott Roeder
2
Project Overview - Interested in exploring the activity that undergraduates undergo when using the UCI Libraries system (and lack thereof) - Why? - Important to understand our users - May reveal usability/interface issues - May serve as inspiration for a re-design of the system - This project is an exploratory research
3
Initial Interviews Purpose: - What kind of paper/report assignments students in their respective field typically work on that may require them to go to the UCI Libraries and look for literature from there? - Ratio of online vs. non-online material - Ratio of online general web vs. online scholarly articles - Secondary literature and/or original research articles Subjects: - Six undergraduates (2 per group member) - Non-ICS/Engineering Majors Tools: - Survey Monkey - Audacity - MP3 Format *Composed of both a closed-ended survey portion and a semi-structured interview portion

Survey

Interview 1.Describe the kind of projects and paper assignments you work on in your classes? 2.Tell us about how you go about completing a project or paper assignment? What steps do you take to start the assignment? What resources do you use to obtain literature? Are you required to use UCI Libraries resources to complete your assignment 3.What kind of material do you read to conduct your literature review? Can you read secondary literature, such as encyclopedias, textbooks, handbooks and survey articles that summarize research results, or must your literature comprise of original research articles? 4.Are there any software or tools that you use to analyze online materials? 5.Have any of your professors asked you to solely use UCI Libraries resources when writing your papers? 6.Have you ever received UCI Libraries training? If so, did the training facilitate your usage of UCI Libraries? 7.Have you professors taken you to a workshop to learn how to use UCI Libraries? 8.Do you use off-site access to UCI Libraries (WebVPN, VPN Client) 9.Does where you live effect your accessibility to the UCI Libraries?
6
Results Our Undergraduates: - 1 School of the Arts - 2 Physical Sciences - 2 Biological Sciences - 1 Social Sciences - 1 Social Ecology Some Trends: - Most identify that they use a lot of online materials - Location does not affect their ability to interact with UCI Libraries - Some bypass UCI Libraries and tap directly into database of interest (e.g., PubMED, Google Scholar) - Previous library training is not specific enough - Most users are learning the system on their own - Majors/Minors delegate their user experience
7
Future Plans Future Interview: - 12-15 Undergraduate Participants - A representative collection of different majors - Cognitive walkthrough (think aloud) - 1 task unrelated to their major - 1 task related to their major - Ask them for improvements after walkthrough Schedule: Walkthroughs (Now - May 8 th ) Analysis (May 9th - May 11 th ) Preparation for Second Presentation (May 12th and 13 th ) Second Presentation (May 14 th ) Re-analysis with Presentation feedback (May 15th - 17 th ) Suggestions and improvements (May 18th - 26 th ) Small mockup(s) (May 17th - 30 th ) Preparation for Final Presentation (May 31st - June 3 rd ) Final Presentation (June 4th)
