Warm ups – I will stamp hw tomorrow! Factor Solve

Homework Questions? 1) y = x 2 + 4x + 3 2) y = -x 2 + 4x – 1 3) y = x 2 + 6x + 9 4) y = -x 2 – 3 5) y = x 2 – 4x Up or down? Max or min? Axis of symmetry? Vertex? Graph?

11-1 Graphing Quadratic Functions (day 2) To graph a quadratic function with an “A” value that is not 1 or -1. Standard 21.0

Remember.. A quadratic equation is in the form: Question for you… What effect does “a” have on the graph?? + makes graph open UP - makes graph open DOWN Whole #s make graph SKINNY Fractions make graph WIDE

Magic Ordered pairs (1,1a)(2,4a)(3,9a) – help us graph without an x-y table. Start at the vertex for each new point. “a” is the leading coefficient of the quadratic equation.. “a”x 2 So, if a = 2, find the magic ordered pairs: (1,2)(2,8)(3,18) If a = ½, find the magic ordered pairs: (1, ½ )(2,2)(3, 9/2)

“11-1 Graphing Quadratic Functions” Worksheet (back side of Friday’s Notes Worksheet ) 1. 2. 3. 3 together and then homework!

Homework Do the homework on the worksheet!! “11-1 Graphing…” You will start on the back of the notes paper, other 6 on worksheet! 1)4) 2)5) 3)6)

More practice The following two examples are for extra practice

Examples Standard Form Opens Up or Down Find the axis of symmetry Find the vertex Graph using the parent function ax 2 + bx + c = y a(+) = up a(-) = down x = – b 2a Plug in x to standard form (1,1) (2,4) (3,9) reflect y = x 2 – 2x – 3 a = 1 b = -2 c = -3 Up Vertex Minimum x = -(-2) 2(1) x = 1 y = (1) 2 – 2(1) – 3 y = 1 – 2 – 3 y = -4 (1,-4)

Examples Standard Form Opens Up or Down Find the axis of symmetry Find the vertex Graph using the parent function ax 2 + bx + c = y a(+) = up a(-) = down x = – b 2a Plug in x to standard form (1,1) (2,4) (3,9) reflect y = x 2 + 4x + 4 a = 1 b = 4 c = 4 Up Vertex Minimum x = -(4) 2(1) x = -2 y = (-2) 2 + 4(-2) + 4 y = 4 – 8 +4 y = 0 (-2,0)
