Representing Linear Functions By Irma Crespo 2010

A B C Draw with Ordered Pairs The coordinates of a point (x, y) is called an ordered pair. Example: point C is at the intersection of x=5 and y=14. So, the ordered pair is (5, 14).

Draw with Ordered Pairs (-20, -5) (-1, 9) (5, 14) The coordinates of a point (x, y) is called an ordered pair. Example: point C is at the intersection of x=5 and y=14. So, the ordered pair is (5, 14). A B C

More Examples on the Whiteboard Graph y = x - 5 Graph y = - 2x Graph y = 2x + 1 For graphing, use the x values: -2, -1, 0, 1, 2.

Graphing a Linear Function The graphs are all straight lines. The graph of the solutions that form a line is called a linear function. A linear function can be represented in words, with a table, with a graph, and as ordered pairs. REMEMBER Create a table, plot the ordered pairs, and connect the points to make the graph for a linear function.

Practice Worksheet Complete the worksheet. You have a choice to work on your own or to work with a partner. Completed worksheets are submitted for grading. Solutions are discussed the next day.
