Seminar 1 MO 260 Welcome & Getting Started with the VMO!

1 st things first Please review the syllabus. This is located under course home tab. Also under doc sharing. Has also been emailed to address on file with University

Announcements Course announcements are posted throughout each week. Please read all announcements on a weekly basis. Seminar announcements are most important- tells you when we have special activities for that week.

Grading Follows the syllabus. Seminar- grades in by Sunday after close of Unit Seminar Option 2 – same as above DB – same as above Activities and Interactive Assignments Exams – mid term and final Each unit has self assessments you have to do--- and yes they are graded! (These are your VMO activities)

DB RULES! DB= discussion board. Every unit has a DB. Initial post to topic question due by Saturday of each week. Required to do at least 2 responses to classmate or instructor. Required length, not “good job”. NOTICE: one topic DB helps us all learn, so please fully participate. Points given based on the rubric in your syllabus.

seminar Seminar has audio Be sure your speakers are working No longer flex – all seminars are same time, one offering as previously – no invites emailed prior to If we get booted out of class, and I do not return within 10 mins, go to the Chat area of the course to finish up.

Assignments These are interactive activities in which students will work through a project or scenario, i.e. (creating a medical record for a new patient or preparing and maintaining an appointment book) Click on the link in the Assignments tab to begin Once completed with the activity you will submit a screen shot of the final page and submit for credit

Assessments Click on the unit for that week. Activity assignment icons are located in center of page. Click on the assessment – instructions provided. Follow directions in the book and use Evolve website. Turn into drop box. Each assessment averages between 30-60 min. Plan your time for the week….

Exams Units 5 and 10 Study guides sent out a week prior via Kaplan email Multiple choice and T/F Cannot be made up!! CUMULATIVE FINAL! it includes everything that was covered in the required readings, lessons, activities, seminar, and discussion boards Seminar PPP will also include exam material so be sure to review this as well.

Late work policy and email Please review KU policy Late work excepted with extenuating circumstance only Computer problems not an extenuating circumstance- online need pc- library/friend etc. If late work accepted may incur late point deduction. If turned in late your responsibility to email me and tell me so it can be graded. Please use KU email, check at least 1-2 times a week

Required Texts… Kinn’s Administrative Medical Assistant, 11 th ed (etext in Course) Virtual Medical Office – Study Guide (hard copy) These are simulated activities (hands on with audio and visual) Access to VMO is through Evolve site Full ebook of the text is included – cannot use previous editions, ie. 6 th or 10 th assignments have been changed

Termination of Patient’s Relationship with Office When patients do not follow medical advice, the physician may decide to terminate the relationship with the patient. Required Steps Prior to Termination -- Document reasons for problem. Send certified letter to patient, stating the problem. Allow time for patient to find a new physician. Keep a copy of the letter and the signed certified mail receipt.

Physicians may need reminders about: License renewal Liability insurance due dates Appropriate certifications Reminders are usually needed!

VMO Access If you already received your study guide follow these steps - Go to http://evolve.elsevier.com/enroll. You will be brought to the page below. Click here:http://evolve.elsevier.com/enroll

Step 1 1. Enter the Course ID: The course ID is: 2123_dsquicciarini1_0002 and then click on the green arrow

Steps 2, 3 and 4 2. Verify that the course information is correct and check Yes this is my course. 3. Select I already have an Access code and enter the code located on the inside front cover of your study guide exactly as it appears. 4. Click Register

Step 5 5. Provide your desired password for the account in the New User area and click Continue.

Step 5 Continued Complete all the necessary information on the next screen as shown below (note: use Kaplan University Information OR choose “not affiliated with an institution”). Be sure to use your own address or the address of the University and click Continue.

Step 6 6. Read the Registered User Agreement. Check Yes, I accept this agreement and click Submit (down in the bottom right hand corner)

Step 6 Continued You now have access to the Virtual Medical Office. This next page will provide you with your username and the password you selected. Keep this information in a safe place. I suggest you write it directly into the cover of your VMO study guide. Click on Get Started to enter your online resource that will take you to the Virtual Medical Office.

If you have not received your Study Guide Yet… Then you will need to use the universal username of scode3 and password spare1234 to access VMO and the online study guide until you receive your own study guide and can create your account.

Go to: http://evolve.elsevier.com and click on Student Site. http://evolve.elsevier.com It will bring you to this log in screen. Enter scode3 (username) and spare1234 (password) – MUST be exact, case sensitive, click login

On this page, you will click on Simulations-VMO (second dropdown)

You will now see blue text for the Kinn’s Medical Assistant. Click on that link.

You will be taken to the course screen, where you will see the words Start this course at the beginning. Click on these words:

On this page, you will click on the Simulations VMO link

On this page, you will click on Virtual Medical Office Simulation. Note: You may need to hold down the CTRL button while you click on the words

This is the opening shot of the program. It plays some pretty music while loading.

Then you will see the following frame appear: (after the first time you can click on Skip Intro).

Type your name into the Mountain View Clinic. Then click Start Simulation.

Closing Thoughts on VMO Now you have entered the Virtual Medical Office. From this point, you will follow the directions in the VMO study guide for entering the Reception, Exam Room, Laboratory, Billing and Coding, Office Manager, and Check Out. Note: be sure to log out. Bookmark http://evolve.elsevier.com/student to easily log in and access your Virtual Medical Office in the future. It will bring you to the login page, where you will need to use your username and password. Once you login, it will bring you to the pages described above.http://evolve.elsevier.com/student

Final Reminders Do not type your responses in the online study guide. You must type answers in a word doc and submit via the Dropbox in the course. Students must submit each VMO activity separately. They cannot combined and submitted in one basket. Have fun! The more you practice the easier it is to navigate
