Type 2 Diabetes
2
What is it? Body uses gl _ _ _ _ _ as energy source. Liver produces i _ _ _ _ _ _ which is used to convert _ _ _ _ _ _ _ into energy. Diabetes is when there is excess glucose in the blood because there is insufficient insulin to process it.
3
How is type 2 different? Type 1 occurs at birth – the cells that produce insulin are destroyed. Injections required to survive. Not diet-related.
4
Type 2 is avoidable. Excess fat intake covers up/blocks insulin production cells. Body produces more insulin to make up for it. Very difficult to maintain blood sugar levels with so much insulin (too much followed by too little energy, mood swings). Damage to pancreas (where insulin is produced) Body eventually loses ability to produce insulin.
5
Causes High, easily processed food (lollies, white bread, cakes soft drinks – things that give you a ‘hit’) More sugar – have to make more insulin – burns out pancreas. Hi fat intake (duh!) Alcohol
6
Prevention OPPOSITE OF CAUSES! Do the good stuff Avoid the bad stuff
