5/21 & 5/22 - 7th Grade Agenda Learning Objective: Learn about Fish
Collect HW: Reading & Notetaking 219 – 222 Chap 11 Test Video: BBC Life “Challenges of Life” Textbook Reading 462 – 467 HW: Reading & Notetaking 223 – 226
2
Reflection Prompt: Write 3 facts that you know about fish.
3
What type of animal is a vertebrate?
Fish Sharks Reptiles Amphibians Mammals Birds
4
What do all Vertebrates share in common?
Backbone Endoskeleton Endoskeleton allows an animal to become larger than Exoskeleton. Why? Skeleton of a Seal
5
One of the most primitive Vertebrate - Lancelet
Notochord: Flexible rod that supports the animal’s back
6
What is Ectotherm vs. Endotherm
Ecto (Outer) + Therm (Heat) = Gets the heat from the outside. Cold blooded Examples of Ectotherm animals: Fish, Amphibian & Reptiles Endo (Inner) + Therm (Heat) = Gets the heat from the inside. Warm blooded Examples of Endotherm animals: Mammals & Birds
7
Fish without jaws - Lampreys
8
Cartilaginous Fishes – Sharks and Rays
9
Bony Fish
10
What are the characteristics of Fishes?
Vertebrate Live in water Have Fins Ectotherm (cold blooded) Have Scales Obtain oxygen through gills
11
How does Fish obtain Oxygen?
Fish obtain oxygen in the water through its gills
12
Does Fish break down H2O into Hydrogen and Oxygen?
Fish do not break H2O into hydrogen and oxygen. There is oxygen gas dissolved in the water. Their gills extract this oxygen gas out of the water and return CO2 just as our lungs do. What would happen to the fish if there was no oxygen in the water?
13
Most fishes have external fertilization
In external fertilization, the eggs are fertilized outside the female’s body. The male hovers close to the female and spreads a cloud of sperm cells over the eggs she releases There are exceptions – Guppies, Mollies (Live birth)
14
Amphibians evolved from Fish
Mudskipper Fish (Type of Goby Fish) It can live out of water for long periods It can breath through its skin just like Amphibians
15
What are Amphibians? The word amphibian means “double life”
After beginning their lives in water Most amphibians spend their adulthood on land Returning to water to reproduce.
16
Life cycle of an Amphibian
17
Do tadpoles have lungs or gills?
18
Do frogs have lungs or gills?
19
Reflection Write 5 facts that you learned in the video.
