2. The Mausoleum

3. Chuck: “It’s turning into Kansas out here” A reference to the film Wizard of Oz. There appears to be a swirling mass of wind and twigs that is reminiscent of the tornado in Wizard of Oz. The storm is over the top and the effects of the wind are exaggerated. Perhaps symbolically it is like the storm going on in Teddy’s mind.

4. As Teddy & Chuck arrive in the mausoleum the camera is down low. Teddy falls into the room, reminiscent of a catch landing on the deck of a boat.

5. As the doors are closed the storm fades into the background and the two men are in a sanctuary. Surrounded by death outside and inside.The sound effect of water dripping continues on the sound track throughout most of the scene.

6. Point of view from Teddy’s perspective of the stained glass eye looking down on them. (The eye that sees all.)

7. Chuck: “If Laeddis is here what are you going to do about it?” Note the placement of the actors- Teddy is larger in the frame- the dominant hero. The audience know he will do something about Laeddis and put things right. At this stage the audience still believe Laeddis is the firebug that killed Teddy’s wife. Our perception of reality within the film is controlled by Teddy. We know things when he knows things. In the film up until this point Teddy has not verbalised out loud what he is thinking of. He just begins to speak about Dachau without any prompting.

8. Similar to the beginning of the film “Fog Tropes" begins on the sound track. The American soldiers come out of the fog towards the camera in a similar way to the boat coming out of the fog at the beginning of the film.

11. Scorsese cross cuts back to Teddy remembering. His voice takes over the sound track- narrating the visuals for the audience.

12. The music fades a little and it is Teddy’s voice which narrates the scene for the audience.

13. A tracking shot shows the inmates.

14. Teddy looks back and retells the story. Here he looks to the past (the left of the frame). Scorsese has used a Convention of camera to indicate this. His past is also in shadows as demonstrated By the left hand side of the frame.

15. This shot is similar to what we have seen before. Here in this mausoleum scene the truth of his experience in Dachau is told. For the audience there is a sense that the mystery is solved. (or so we think) Scorsese seems to repeat the earlier scene But there are some surreal differences. There are no soldiers in this shot throwing paper Around. So this is impossible the paper is coming from out of nowhere. This is the image Teddy remembers.
