Northern Metropolitan Region Achievement Improvement Zones The Thematic model Each subject area draws out key concepts and ideas to explore that relate to the theme Eg: TRIBES: Every school should be a model home, a complete community actively developing future compassionate citizens capable of creating, leading and contributing to the kind of democratic communities - in which we all long to live. What maths might link to creating a school community?

Northern Metropolitan Region Achievement Improvement Zones Concept, Skill, Application model 3 types of lessons: Concept - focus on understanding the key concepts without being bogged down with algorithms or rules Skills – focus on mastery of process/algorithm Application – focus on solving problems in a context relevant to the student In a 10 lesson unit how many of each type of lesson is ideal? (Textbook is typically 1-8-1)

Mathletics) Independent structured worksheets/textbook Whole class lesson then three groups rotate through one lesson of each style Discuss how differentiation in relation to this model

Number Count, compare and order collections up to 10 objects (and beyond) Model numbers up to 5 (then to10) Subitise up to 5 objects Use counting strategies to find and verbalise relationships between numbers Use materials to create simple number patterns Use ordinal number Space Recognise, describe & name simple shapes and objects Make and draw reasonable representations of simple shapes Measurement and data Identify and describe the attributes of length in everyday language Estimate, measure and compare length using informal methods Time Relate and describe time in terms of familiar recurring phenomena in own life Recite the days of the week in order Data Collect, represent and summarise data using pictographs

Northern Metropolitan Region Achievement Improvement Zones Week 4Level 2 Monday Warm up 10 min Flash cards: Numbers, word, subitize dots Launch 10-15 min Focus: Revision of number facts to 10 Activity: Story and materials sketches about 2 paddocks and 4 cows. How might the farmer arrange the cows? (eg 0 + 4, 1 + 3, 3 + 1) Explore 20 min Easy Middle Hard Use paper paddocks and 5 counters to redo the launch activity independently and write the equations 5 = 1 + 4, etc Use paddock paper and 10 counters to explore groupings to make 10 Write a number between 5 and 10 (or 20) on one side of card. (Model) & write all the number facts for the number on the back of the card. Summarise 10 min Select student to list a number fact on a class chart. Record systematically Warm down 10 min Give 10 students a numbered card. Ask them to order themselves from 1-10 Use 4 random number cards from 1-10 (or 20) and repeat. Question: strategies, missing numbers, more/less than
