Natural (adj): Existing in or formed by nature. Collocation: Natural polymers (adj. phr.) CANKAYA UNIVERSITY - OFFICE OF BASIC AND ELECTIVE COURSES- ENGLISH UNIT

Synthetic: (adj): Produced by synthesis instead of being isolated from a natural source (but may be identical to a product so obtained). Synonym: Manmade (adj) Collocation: Synthetic polymer (adj. Phr.) Word formation: Synthetically (adv) CANKAYA UNIVERSITY - OFFICE OF BASIC AND ELECTIVE COURSES- ENGLISH UNIT

Plastic: (n) any of a group of synthetic or natural organic materials that may be shaped when soft and then hardened including many types of polymers, cellulose derivatives, casein materials and proteins. CANKAYA UNIVERSITY - OFFICE OF BASIC AND ELECTIVE COURSES- ENGLISH UNIT

Molecule: (n): The smallest particle of a specific element or compound that retains the chemical properties of that element or compound. CANKAYA UNIVERSITY - OFFICE OF BASIC AND ELECTIVE COURSES- ENGLISH UNIT

Atom: (n): A theoretical particle of metal, imagined to be incapable of further division. CANKAYA UNIVERSITY - OFFICE OF BASIC AND ELECTIVE COURSES- ENGLISH UNIT

Chain: (n): two or more atoms of the same element usually carbon attached as in a chain. Collocation: Polymer chain (n. phr.) CANKAYA UNIVERSITY - OFFICE OF BASIC AND ELECTIVE COURSES- ENGLISH UNIT

Rubber (n): a thick flexible substance used for making tires etc. CANKAYA UNIVERSITY - OFFICE OF BASIC AND ELECTIVE COURSES- ENGLISH UNIT

Latex (n): The milky sap of several trees that coagulates on exposure to air; used to make rubber. e.g.: Latex materials are used in mattresses, swim caps, catherer, and balloons. e.g.: Latex gloves are commonly used in the field of medicine. 11 Thermoplastics (n): Sentheticpolymers that can be melted by heat and formed in shaped containers. A thermoplastic is a type of plastic that can be heated and moulded numerous types. CANKAYA UNIVERSITY - OFFICE OF BASIC AND ELECTIVE COURSES- ENGLISH UNIT

Mould: (v): To make something usually for a specific function Word formation: Moulded (adj), mould (n) CANKAYA UNIVERSITY - OFFICE OF BASIC AND ELECTIVE COURSES- ENGLISH UNIT

ABS (n): (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene): stiff and light, used in vehicle bodywork. e.g.: ABS is commonly used in pipes, musical instruments, golf club heads, otomotive bumpers, luggages, toys and lego bricks. CANKAYA UNIVERSITY - OFFICE OF BASIC AND ELECTIVE COURSES- ENGLISH UNIT

Polycarbonate (n): A material used to make strong, transparent panels and vehicle lights. e.g. Polycarbonates are used for molded products, films and nonbreakable windows. CANKAYA UNIVERSITY - OFFICE OF BASIC AND ELECTIVE COURSES- ENGLISH UNIT

PVC (n): PVC is a plastic material that is used for many purposes, for example to make clothing or shoes or to cover chairs. PVC is an abbreviation for `polyvinyl chloride'. e.g.: PVCs are used to make pipes, window frames, clothes etc CANKAYA UNIVERSITY - OFFICE OF BASIC AND ELECTIVE COURSES- ENGLISH UNIT

Thermoset (n): Also called “thermosetting plastics” It is a material which hardens or sets when heat is applied and which, once set, cannot be resoftened by heating. The application of heat is called "curing " CANKAYA UNIVERSITY - OFFICE OF BASIC AND ELECTIVE COURSES- ENGLISH UNIT

Epoxy resin (n): Used in very strong adhesives. e.g. Epoxy resins are used for coatings, adhesives and foam. CANKAYA UNIVERSITY - OFFICE OF BASIC AND ELECTIVE COURSES- ENGLISH UNIT

Cure (v): a process whereby a material is caused to form permanent molecular linkages by exposure to chemicals, heat, pressure and/or weathering e.g. During cooling or mixing, a chemical reaction occurs, causing thermosets to cure. This means they set permanently and cannot be molded again. CANKAYA UNIVERSITY - OFFICE OF BASIC AND ELECTIVE COURSES- ENGLISH UNIT

Elastomer: (n): a material that recovers its shape after a deforming force is removed. e.g. Elastomers are rubber-like substances. CANKAYA UNIVERSITY - OFFICE OF BASIC AND ELECTIVE COURSES- ENGLISH UNIT

Polyimide (n): Any polymer whose monomers are imides; used to make high-temperature resins. e.g.: Polyimides are strong and flexible. They are used as insulators in some electric cables. CANKAYA UNIVERSITY - OFFICE OF BASIC AND ELECTIVE COURSES- ENGLISH UNIT
