Changing Matter Physical & Chemical Reactions NOTES

What different ways can we differentiate between Mr. Stobaugh & Mr. Hall ??

Matter has PROPERTIES Two basic types of properties that we can associate with matter …. Physical Properties Chemical Properties

Physical Properties Anything that can be observed without changing the identity of the substance. Melting point Boiling point Color Size (density, volume, mass) Conduct electricity Conduct heat

Chemical Properties The way a substance may change or react to form other substances. Reactivity with water pH Reactivity with other chemicals Flammability Oxidation – RUST !!!

Matter can be changed in 2 ways Physically Chemically

Physical Changes DO NOT CHANGE THE TYPE OF MATTER! Nothing new or different is formed Examples: Change in  size, shape, color, or change in state (liquid, solid, gas, plasma) Boiling, Freezing, Dissolving, Mixing, Breaking

Chemical Changes The composition of the substance changes! The substances at the beginning are no longer present at the end. NEW substances are made The change CANNOT be undone! Examples: change in color, form a gas, form a precipitate, change in energy, gets hot or cold!

Physical & Chemical Change Watch this!

Your Turn! Directions: 1.Number your paper from 1-10 2.Read each scenario 3.List whether the scenario is a physical or chemical change.

Physical or Chemical Change? 1.Painting a wooden picture frame 2.Burning a newspaper 3. Digesting food 4. Sugar dissolving in water 5.Iron turning red when heated

Physical or Chemical Change? 6. Rain evaporating 7. Pond freezing in the winter 8. Decomposition of fall leaves 9. Old nail rusting 10. Baking muffins

During Chemical Changes Atoms are rearranged… NOT created or destroyed!

Law of Conservation of Mass The mass of products must be the same as the mass of the reactants in the chemical equation. Nothing is created or destroyed!
