1 Newton’s 1st Law: Part 2 Physics Ms. Allison

2 Review Topic weight Facts The force of gravity on an object
WEIGHT IS NOT MASS!!! Weight equals mass times gravity (w = mg) w = weight (N) m = mass (kg) g = gravity (10m/s2) UNITS: Since weight is a force we use Newtons as the units (not pounds)

3 Think Critically Task Explanation Since w = mg
How would your weight compare in outer space to on Earth? How would your mass compare in outer space compared to on Earth? How would your volume compare in outer space compared to on Earth? Explanation You would weigh less in outer space because gravity is less in outer space than on Earth Mass remains the same because your inertia is the same in outer space as it is on Earth Volume also remains the same, because you take up the same amount of space on Earth and outer space.

4 What about other outside forces
Topic Friction Facts Is a force that slows/stops motion Depends on surface Grass vs. Ice High Friction Low Friction

5 What about other outside forces
Topic Friction Facts Opposes motion

6 What about other outside forces
Topic Friction Facts FF = µFN FF = friction force (N) µ = (mu) coefficient of friction (No Units) FN = normal force (N) *find FN by finding an objects weight!!

7 FF = µFN Support/Normal Force FN = normal force (N)
Topic Normal Force Facts FF = µFN FN = normal force (N) Normal force is upward force equal to the magnitude of weight. *find FN by finding an objects weight!!

8 Reach for the Stars Based on the equation for friction force, why doesn’t the coefficient of friction have units?

9 Friction Depends on the Surface
Topic The amount of friction depends on the coefficient of friction Facts Larger “µ” means more friction Gravel Snow tires Smaller “µ” means less friction ice

10 Solving for Friction Force
We will use Handout 3-2 Friction to solve for the Friction Force

11 Closing Write a paragraph that correctly includes ALL of the following terms: The Law of Inertia Newton’s 1st Law Friction Inertia Equilibrium Net Force
