“In the end, we will only conserve what we love. We will only love what we understand. We will only understand what we are taught.”

“Those who dwell among the beauties and mysteries of the earth are never alone or weary of life.” Rachel CarsonThose who dwell among the beauties and mysteries of the earth are never alone or weary of life. “The care of the Earth is our most ancient and most worthy, and after all our most pleasing responsibility. To cherish what remains of it and to foster its renewal is our only hope.” Wendell BerryThe care of the Earth is our most ancient and most worthy, and after all our most pleasing responsibility. To cherish what remains of it and to foster its renewal is our only hope. “We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children.” Native American Proverb “Humankind has not woven the web of life. We are but one thread within it. Whatever we do to the web, we do to ourselves. All things are bound together. All things connect.” Chief Seattle Ponder our Earth…

MAGNET EARTH SYSTEMS NOTEBOOK Mr. Schafer

Which question would you like to answer? 1.How far is it from the Earth to the Sun? 2. How can we calculate the distance from the Earth to the Sun? Which question would require more thought to answer? Which answer would contribute the most to your education? What do you want your education to be?

Education is what remains after one has forgotten what one has learned in school. “Tell me and I'll forget; show me and I may remember; involve me and I'll understand.” They know enough who know how to learn. You cannot teach a man anything; you can only help him find it within himself.

YOU SOLVE. I’LL HELP. Magnet Earth Systems is a course designed around the excitement, challenge, and satisfaction of solving problems.

We will work cooperatively to solve problems using a natural process called Problem-Based Learning. How would you learn to use your new, fancy, state-of-the-art cell phone? PBL Process 1. Problem presented 2. Analysis of problem (givens) 3. List prior knowledge 4. Create hypothetical problem statement 5. List what is needed (essential questions) 6. Create an action plan 7. Carry out plan

Problem Notes 1.Notebooks are a composition journal with gridlines and your name and class for identification purposes. 2.Note entries are titled by date, CW or HW, and topic. 3.Entries are in pen and on numbered right pages. Omissions are made with one horizontal line 4.Research sources are always cited. 5.Left pages can be used for additions, corrections, source citations, etc. 6.Use grid for charts, graphs, sketches, diagrams. 7.Skip a line or 2 between entries. 8.Notebooks should be neat but functional. 9.Notes are authentic. They are written summaries of research. Copies of data are not authentically yours and generally do not belong in this notebook. 10.Notebooks will start with 2 full pages for Table of Contents (Page, Topic columns) and 3 full pages for a Homework Log (Date, Time, Topic, Check columns) We will not have a textbook. We will create our own as a course notebook / journal.
