Patterns in the Periodic Table
2
Drill Do you think there is a logic to the way that the Periodic Table is arranged? Why or why not?
3
Objective The student will be able to describe the structure of the Periodic Table in order to explain how it is organized.
4
Arrange the element cards as directed by your teacher.
5
Number 1 Arrange the cards according to their states of matter. Using three different colors (one for each state of matter), color in the corresponding squares on the Periodic Table. Create a key above the Periodic Table.
6
Number 2 Arrange the cards according to the number of their outer (valence) electrons. These are the particles involved in chemical reactions. Choose different colors for each number of outer electrons. Color in the corresponding squares on your Periodic Table. Create a key

Title of page 7, Periodic Table Analysis. Answer the following questions: 1.In what ways does the Periodic Table group the elements? Use what you learned from this activity to support your answer. 2.Can a scientist determine the property of an element based upon its location on the Periodic Table? Justify your answer using evidence from this activity.
