New York State Science Olympiad Coaches’ Meeting 28 October 2011 Chemistry Lab Event 1.Overview and Introduction 2.Regional Competition 3.State Competition 4.Feed back from previous chem lab competitions 1.We don’t want to make the same mistake …. For questions, contact: Mr. Jim WilliamsMs. Jen Wagner 914-721-2596914-721-3385 jwilliams@scarsdaleschools.orgjwagner@scarsdaleschools.org

Chemistry Lab Introduction ▫Periodicity  Trends  Predictions  Organization ▫Electrochemistry  Galvanic and electrolytic cells  Energy applications  Favored and non-favored reactions

Chemistry Lab Regional Competition ▫Practical Lab Skills  Make predictions based upon periodic trends  Generate activity series ▫Examination  Vocabulary  Calculations  Analysis

Chemistry Lab State Competition ▫Practical Lab Skills  Use predictions based upon periodicity to solve problems  Develop standard reduction table ▫Examination  Vocabulary  Calculations  Analysis  Use electrochemistry to determine reaction rates

Chemistry Lab Feedback and Questions Jim Williams: jwilliams@scarsdaleschools.org Jen Wagner: jwagner@scarsdaleschools.org Web Site: http://scarsdale.schoolwires.net/shs/site/default. asp Select the “Teacher Pages”. Select “Williams, James”

Sherman notes: Be sure to know the listed ions on the rule sheet on the state test know the history state test MAY be electrolytic cell or Nernst equation if they cannot get electrolysis equipment Fuel cells definitely on state test Definitely be balancing an acid at states Points for cleaning up – be sure to stop at a good time so you don’t lose points No reference tables given – may get a periodic table Know how to calculate the mean from data, standard deviation Don’t forget goggles (tight on face), aprons

Sherman notes continued: Given a fixed amount of chemicals – use wisely – no extra chemicals given He tends to stay away from spontaneous and nonspontaneous Stoic on state test Full explanation for trends may be a tie breaker on states
