Today’s Objectives To describe the battles that took place in the Philippines and Cuba To explain how, by gaining Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines from Spain, the United States took a step toward becoming a world power To describe the relationship of the U.S. and Cuba from 1898 to 1902

The Short War The war lasted 4 months Spanish navy in the Philippines was destroyed American troops were sent to the island of Cuba Teddy Roosevelt led his soldiers called the “Rough Riders” to San Juan Hill, which they captured The ships outside the Santiago harbor were sunk as well

How did the war end? Spain and the U.S. agreed to stop fighting on 8/12/1898 Declared an “armistice” a break to talk peace Treaty of Paris signed on 12/10/1898

What did the U.S. gain due to the Treaty of Paris? Cuba gained its independence US gained Puerto Rico, Guam and the Philippines ($20 million to Spain) 1901 we gained the rights to build the Panama Canal This would keep the US influence in the region We stayed in world affairs until the outbreak of World War I
