2 The Republic of Texas I. In the early 1800s, American farmers looked eagerly to the vast region called Texas. “At this time, Texas was part of the Spanish Colony of Mexico.” “Spain refused To let Americans settle in Texas.” “Bummer!”

In 1821, Mexico won its independence and agreed to let Stephen Austin bring settlers to Texas. “I gathered about 300 families to move to Texas and settle a colony.” “Mexico wanted settlers to develop the land and to control Indian attacks.” “Many settlers came from the cotton regions of the South and brought their slaves with them.”

4 II. In 1821, Mexico won its independence and agreed to let Stephen Austin bring settlers to Texas.
